James Neuhard

Director of the State Appellate Defender’s Office for the State of Michigan. He is the former President of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, the National Equal Justice Library, and the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan. He has chaired the ABA’s Special Committee on Funding the Justice System, has been a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defense, and has chaired the Bar Information Program. He is a principal author of what is now the ABA’s “Ten Principles of a Public Defense Delivery System.” He was a participant in the Executive Sessions on Indigent Defense at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, has been awarded NLADA’s Reginald Heber Smith Award, the Michigan State Bar’s Champion of Justice Award, and has been honored by the Michigan Chapter of the National Lawyer’s Guild for his career as a lawyer.
